15 cubic feet per ton*

or 133 lbs. per cubic foot*

*Note: The true cubic footage weights are 145-160 pounds per cubic foot, for solid unbroken stone, or about 13 cubic feet per ton on average. Being unlikely that you will be able to stack the stone that tightly, using the true numbers would result in an erroneous quantity being delivered to your site, further resulting, upon completion of the job, in hostile thoughts being pointed in our general direction, therefore, we have adjusted this number to be more consistent with reality in order to circumvent those aforementioned hostile thoughts and have happy customers in perpetuity. So you don't have any leftovers we thought it best this way.

Convert all measurements from feet and inches into their decimal equivalent in feet only.

Example: You have a measurement of 6' 9"

(9"/12") + 6' = 6.75'

Square Footage (squares & rectangles)

(length x width) = Square Footage

Square Footage (circles)

(radius x radius) 3.14159 = Square Footage

Square Footage (right triangles)

(1/2 x width) length = Square Footage

Cubic Footage

(square footage x depth) = Cubic Footage

Cubic Yardage

(cubic footage / 27) = Cubic Yardage

Circumference of a circle

(diameter) 3.14159 = Circumference

Figure out the square footage to be covered

Multiply the square footage by the depth desired to get the cubic footage

Divide the cubic footage by 27 to get the cubic yards needed

Example: A rectangular landscape bed is 12' 8" long and averages 5' 6" wide and the depth desired is 2 ½" deep.

(12.66' x 5.5) = 69.3 square feet

(69.3 x .208) = 14.414 cubic feet

(14.414 / 27) = .534 cubic yards needed

Figure out the square footage to be covered

Get the coverage per ton of the product desired

Divide the square footage needed by the coverage per ton

Example: A patio or wall is 20' long and 8' wide or high and you would like to use Buff Patio flagstone that has a coverage of 110-130 square feet per ton.

(20' x 8') = 160 square feet

Average coverage is 120 square feet per ton

(160 / 120) = 1.333 tons needed

Determine the average length, the average height and the average width of the stone in feet

Multiply the length by the width by the height to get the cubic footage

There is about 15 cubic feet in a ton of building stone or flagstone so divide the cubic footage by 15 to determine the quantity of stone needed in tons

Example: A 20' long stacked stone wall that is 1' thick and 2' tall

Length = 20', Height = 2', Width = 1'

(20' x 2' x 1') = 40 cubic feet

(40 / 15) = 2.667 tons of stone needed
